Amazon frown

Last week, I was sad to hear that Amazon is ending Amazon Smile. The program allowed customers to have a sliver of each Amazon purchase donated to charity.

Amazon says the program “has not grown to create the impact that we had originally hoped” since its creation in 2013. The program will end in February 2023.

The organization that I linked to the program is the education fund of ACES: The Society for Editing. The fund supports scholarships for college students interested in editing and fellowships for mid-career editors. I am a member of the fund’s board.

The ACES education fund has received about $120 a year via Amazon Smile purchases. That’s a small amount, but every little bit helps.

Of course, I support the education fund in other ways. Here’s how to help:

— Contribute directly via the ACES website.

— Attend the spelling bee at the ACES conference.

— Donate and buy items at the silent auction at the conference.

If you were an Amazon Smile customer, I hope that you will find other ways to contribute to the charity of your choice. Giving is good!
